Description: "This fortification was originally constructed in 1609, and was then known as Fort Algernourne. The construction of Fortress Monroe was begun in 1819 and finished in 1830. The battle between the Monitor and Merrimac on March 9, 1862, the first conflict between iron clad vessels, was fought in Hampton Roads, in sight of this Fortress.
